So you're interested in joining a bird list?

Incase you don't know what a Bird Email List is- a bird Email list is a group of people, who ever has happened to join, that discuss bird topics via Emails. Any member sends and Email to the list manager, and the list manager sends a copy to all other members. It ends up being like a non-stop chat session.   You can also get most lists in a digest format - every few hours the list manager will send you a compilation of the latest Emails.  Many lists also have a web page that memebers can put their pictures on, so you can know who your talking to, and even see the birds you're talking about!  Bird Email lists can be especially informative to people who are new to birds.  You can ask questions and get a variety of answers from very knowledgable people.  Most lists have a few members that have been on forever and are typically breeders or just enthusiasts who know ALOT about birds so you can get some very fact filled answers to even the toughest questions.  Some lists are more chatty and friendly than others, and some are breeder specific, some are a little snooty, and some insist you stay on topic, you may want to try different ones to find the arena you like.  And beware of flame wars, some lists tolerate more than others, but be polite and remember - opinions are like belly buttons, everybody's got one!!

Pick a list that looks interesting to you and read what comes into your mailbox for a few days to understand how it works. Proper netiquitte is to introduce yourself and your birds - then ask away!
